A Labor Day Toddler Cake...

When you have a tiny wooden spoon, a tiny Tupperware bowl and a Grandma who doesn't mind a mess, you make a Toddler Cake.
We baked her concoction. Basically it was a giant chocolate chip cookie tasting cake then she made icing and put that on.
Then most of the jar of sprinkles...
Then we wanted to take a picture of her with the cake and she was so excited and jumping that it was necessary for me to hold the cake for her. Sprinkles all over. But so worth it.

1st Anniversary Cake

Bobbi and Travis will celebrate 1 year of marriage on August 17. Last night we had a family get together and I decided to make them a cake and celebrate a week early.
I chose to decorate it with things they have done and gone through this past year.
1: They destructed their entire basement with the help of Bryan (Superman)
2: They remodeled it again with Bryan's help.
3: While doing that they decided to gut, as much as possible, the breezeway that is a dining area.
4: Painted and finished the basement and dining area.
5. Refinished the kitchen cabinets.
6: Painted the bathroom.
7. Got new carpet in the basement.
8: Immediately got flooded in the basement and had to tear out the carpet pad and replace it.
9: The flooding resulted in tearing out the deck and doing major dirt repairs to the backyard.
10: Cut down a tree.
11: Painted in the kitchen area.
12: Rearranged all the bedrooms and got a new bed.
13: Replaced the door to the back yard.
All while each working about 10 -12 hours a day. They amaze me.
I am sure there are more things I don't even know about. And Superman rated a place on the cake because they admit and it is true none of this would have gotten done without his hard work every Monday for all winter.
Through all of this, which most poeple don't take on in a lifetime, let alone their first year of marriage, they have laughed, cried, stayed friends and come out on the other side still married and happy. I salute them!
They hope to put in a patio so I have them as Wolverine and Wonder Woman standing on that.
It was such a fun cake to create and a fun couple to create it for.

Pool Party Cookies

In reality it is Pool celebration cookies. For 15 years I have wished we could put a pool on our property. Just an above ground one, nothing too complicated. This Monday that wish is coming true! We are putting in a pool. I am so excited! The girls, Travis and Poppy are coming out for supper and my sister will be here on her way back to North Carolina. So I made some cookies to celebrate.

Real Madrid Jersey Cake

Trey turns 23 this Wednesday and LOVES Real Madrid. So I made him a jersey cake.
First I printed out pictures of the Real Madrid logo, the Adidas logo and the Fly Emirates logo. Then using fondant I made the shape of the Real Madrid logo and let it dry for a bit. I did run a stitching wheel around the outside so it would look stitched on.
In the meantime I cut out the Adidas logo. I used my FMM Sugarcraft Block letters and trimmed them to look like the adidas writing.
Next I baked a white 9x13 cake and let it cool. While that was cooling I made a placket with buttons.
and cut around paper cut outs of the "Fly Emirates" logo for the shirt.
That was definately the most intricate cutting but I did use an Exacto knife and it worked great.
I trimmed out a collar area on the cake. Forgot to take a picture...made a collar out of white fondant and draped it over that area so it could dry a bit to shape.

When the Real Madrid logo was dry enough I used my Rainbowdust food color markers and colored in the logo. Mostly I just looked at the picture and freehanded it.
Then I made white buttercream icing and added white food color to it to brighten the white. Iced the cake, smoothed it with a viva towel and began placing my pieces.
I started with the color and placket
Then the Real Madrid logo
The adidas loge was next. I used a tweezers to place the pieces of this and the next one.
At this point I thought I was done...
Looked online to make sure I had it right and realized there are three stripes on the shoulders. So I cut three stripes for each shoulder and placed them on the upper edge of the cake.
Again, thought I was done...
Decided to make a tag for the collar.
Used my FMM Sugarcraft letters to cut out Trey's name and gently rolled it into some white fondant then put stitching to look like it is sewn into the shirt.
So now it feels done...
But then this morning I decided it needed a price tag.
This is why I should just deliver them!! I will never be done.
I am done now. And very pleased with the outcome.

Minions, Minions, Minions

They are taking over my dining room! A friend of Bobbi's asked if I would make 40 cookies and a big cake for a Minion themed birthday party for her son. So of course I said yes.
I used a rocket cutter for the Minions and just cut out the middle booster at the bottom.
Also you probably see my hexagon shape in there! Oh that Crate & Barrel cutter!!
I drew on where I wanted the overalls then filled in the yellow.
Filled in the overalls after the yellow had set and also added arms. Not sure if you can see it in this picture but the top two on the right have the arms added.
Put on straps and buttons
At this point I got so into decorating that I forgot to take pictures of my steps... so on to the Evil Minions...for these i used the rocket with the middle booster cut out and then added part of a heart, flower and small hand to make the hair on them. Notice I forgot to cut out the middle booster on that bottom left cookie...awkward...I cut it out.
I put some mouths on and let them dry for awhile.
I added grey circles and black on the sides to look like their goggles then I filled the grey circles with white and made the eyes. Put another grey circle on top of the first one for dimension then painted them silver with lustre dust. I also made some of those hexagons into blocks to spell out the birthday boy's name in Minion colors, of course!
I also made google cookies with a glassed cutter that I have.

Three speech bubble cookies...

You get the idea...Minions...Evil Minions...and just when you thought it was over there was the cake.
I baked three 6" rounds, 4 cupcakes, and one 6' bowl to create this shape. Initally when I baked it I thought I would stack them up so it looked like he was sitting up but I had forgotten about arms! So desperation is mother of invention in cake making and I am actually very happy that I decided to lay him down. By trimming off a bit the back to lay him flat I ended up with the rounded bottom and two arms. The legs and feet are cupcakes.
Made a pattern for his overalls. I don't work with fondant and why I decided to try it when I had no time to make a mistake is beyond me but I wanted the overalls to look real!
So icing between all the layers then a crumb coat. A litttle thicker than your average crumb coat but ...
I thought it was necessary to cover all the joins. At this point I thought it looked like a fat cob of corn...
I put on a thicker coat of icing and then when it was slightly dryer I used the Viva towel method to get it smooth.
So roll out denim blue fondant which was made by mixing a dark blue, a light blue, white and a tiny bit of black. I rolled a tool along the seams to make it look stitched.
I also did it in three pieces because I wanted the pockets to look real.
Now it looks like a Nebraska farmer cob of corn...
The hands are some cakeballs that I formed and dipped into black coating. I also used that coating on the cupcake halves that are the feet. Worked like a charm and I didn't have to try and cover the with fondant.
I added straps and had made some buttons out of fondant the day before so I glued them on using corn syrup.
The hair was made by piping the leftover candy coating in one inch strips and then when they were hard I put them into the icing. Added a pocket to the overall front.
I made a fondant strap for the glasses then put corn syrup on it so the glasses and eyes would glue to it. I had made them the night before out of gumpaste and fondant.
Made the symbol for the pocket and Done...take a picture from all angles because you can't figure out what it needs...
OHHHH... the denim looked to one dimensional so I added white lustre dust to them and YES that was what it needed.
So, cake accomplished. Very pleased with all my Minions.

Happy Baking,

Patti
